Sub-littoral Zone
The oceans are divided into two main biomes - the sublittoral zone and the deep oceanic zone. The sub-littoral zone, also known as the neritic zone or coastal zone, refers to the ocean area closest to shore. It begins at the low-tide line and extends to the edge of the continental shelf with a depth of up to 200 meters. Although these relatively shallow waters make up less than 10% of the total ocean area, it is home to 98% of all marine life.
